The samurai originated in Japan during the Heian period (794–1185) as elite warriors serving noble families. They rose to prominence with the Kamakura Shogunate (1185–1333) and became the ruling warrior class, governed by the Bushido code of honor and loyalty.

During the Sengoku era (1467–1603), samurai adapted to new warfare tactics amid constant conflict. The Edo period (1603–1868) saw their role shift to bureaucratic duties under Tokugawa rule. With the Meiji Restoration (1868), the samurai class was abolished, but their legacy endures in modern Japanese culture through values of honor and discipline.
